We call on Congress to resist the Trump II regime’s attempted unilateral withdrawal from the United Nations climate change treaty.
The Constitution assigns to the President the singular duty to “take care that the laws are faithfully executed.” It provides, as well, that constitutional provisions, federal statutes, and Senate-approved treaties comprise the Supreme Law of the Land.
Accordingly, the President should not unilaterally withdraw the nation from the Senate-approved United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). His recent (Feb. 27) attempt to do just that must be challenged. Because withdrawal is not effective until 12 months have passed, we still have time to reverse direction.
Virtually every nation on the planet is a Party to the UNFCCC and, to date, no nation, once a party, has ever withdrawn from it.
This is a fraught moment, requiring that we take a stand together. Congress needs to wield its own constitutionally-invested authority, as representative of the people, to counter the President’s unwarranted arrogation of power. One or both Houses of Congress should oppose the President’s attempted unilateral withdrawal from the UNFCCC. In turn, when our Senators and Representatives stand up, we will have their back.
The United States must remain-in and not withdraw from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Please join us now in signing the Remain-In Petition. |
Illegality All Around: Whither the United Nations Climate Treaty? |
On February 27, the Trump II regime undertook two actions that strike at the heart of the rules-based international order — or what is left of it. One of these actions was well-publicized, the other not at all. The well-reported action was the Trump II regime’s decision – rendered, apparently, on Feb. 27 at 3:28 p.m. EST from aboard Air Force One – to launch a war against Iran.
The other enormous action undertaken on Feb. 27 – this one entirely unreported, as far as I have been able to discern – was the formal move by the Trump II regime to withdraw the nation from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Read more here . . .
