War, Iran & the Climate

We republish here, with permission, a recent discussion under the above title, organized by our colleagues at Climate Emergency Forum with CPR Initiative Executive Director Dan Galpern.

The entire show is worth watching, but we highlight here segments in which Dan discusses:

  • The unlawful nature of the U.S. attack on Iran (minute 3:00),
  • Tools still available to citizens seeking to reclaim our democracy under the rule of law (minute 18:00), and
  • The simultaneous inadequacy and centrality of the law, including international law (minutes 29:40 through 32:00).

The President Must Not Unilaterally Withdraw from the World Climate Treaty

Chief among those “tools still available” to citizens seeking to reclaim a democracy under the rule of law is the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It reads, in full:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

It is under this constitutional authority that CPR Initiative recently issued its petition calling upon Congress to stand up to the White House’s attempted usurpation of the U.S. Senate’s constitutionally-defined role in treaty-making. Specifically, the petition demands that Congress oppose the President’s unilateral withdrawal of the nation from the world’s climate treaty.
