Averting the Cambo Catastrophe

Published

In a joint letter, Dr. James E. Hansen and Dan Galpern, today, called on a key UK official, the Rt Hon Kwasi Kwarteng, to cancel a huge offshore oil and gas project in the North Sea.

Citing to analysis by Friends of the Earth, Uplift, ClientEarth, and other environmental groups, we noted that emissions from the so-called “Cambo Project” would be equivalent to an estimated 16-18 coal fired power plants.

Such a new North Sea oil and gas project sharply conflicts with the fundamental goals of the UK and the international community, and undermines prospects for restoring and protecting the climate system. Accordingly, Hansen and Galpern urged Mr. Kwarteng’s “resolute rejection” of Cambo.
