Seeking A Phase out of New and A Removal of Legacy Fossil Fuel Greenhouse Gas Emissions

This Petition demands that the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) not only phase out dangerous Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, but also compel oil, gas and coal companies to clean up their mess. How so? By removing excess “legacy” carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₂) in the air – or else pay into a carbon removal fund to ensure that the removal happens.

Under existing law (including the Toxic Substances Control Act) the EPA is required, in response to our Petition, to determine if fossil fuel GHG emissions present an imminent and unreasonable risk of serious or widespread injury to health or the environment.¹ If so, then the Agency needs to take action “to the extent necessary” to ensure that these chemical substances no longer present such risks.
